Der Hilferuf eines Sterbenden erreicht Pater Brown, der daraufhin nach Dartford, Südengland, reist. Im Gasthaus des Mister Howard trifft der Pater auf Jayden Elliot, der ihn sogleich vor einem seltsamen Gast warnt. In der darauffolgenden Nacht kommt es im Gasthaus zu einem entsetzlichen Verbrechen. Doch dies ist erst der Auftakt zu weiteren Verwicklungen. Im nahe gelegenen Lagerhaus an der Themse wird kurz darauf ein Toter gefunden. Pater Brown ermittelt, noch bevor die Polizei den Tatort erreicht. Alles läuft auf eine Konfrontation mit dem Mörder hinaus…
